If you dream of having thicker, stronger and glossier hair that gleams with health and vitality, the good news is that you can stop dreaming and make it a reality. By simply following these eight easy steps, you can naturally improve the quality of your locks and enjoy gorgeous hair every day.
1. For curly hair, use a boar bristle brush
Boar bristle brushes are known to make hair shinier and smoother than regular brushes, plus the sturdy but flexible bristles are excellent for taming unruly curls. To avoid damage, start brushing from the bottom and work your way up, gently working out any tangles - this is good practise for both your own hair and your clip-in hair extensions. The boar brush is densely packed with soft bristles and can easily remove any build up, dirt and debris from your hair, while moving the natural oils from your hair all along the shaft of the hair cuticle. Remember to clean your brush regularly.
2. Forget the 100 strokes
Don’t be tempted to follow the old wives’ tale to brush your hair 100 times before bed each night. The truth is that brushing too much or too often can weaken your hair. You should brush your hair only to style it, as brushing too much can pull hairs out of their follicles and weaken the individual strands.
3. Don’t brush wet hair
Your hair is at its weakest when wet, and therefore much more prone to breakage. After washing, carefully towel-dry (ideally wait for it to air-dry) your hair and avoid brushing it until it is dry. If you absolutely must de-tangle it while it’s still wet, use a wide-toothed comb and work gently from tip to root.
4. Use sulphate and paraben-free shampoo
Many commercial shampoos contain ingredients that are harmful to your hair. In fact, the additives that make your shampoo foamy are often the ingredients that are most damaging to your locks. When choosing a shampoo range, look for one that is paraben and sulphate free, such as Frontrow's shampoo. Rich with Vitamin B5 and Vegetable Keratin, our hair care products are designed to be nourishing and gentle for your hair (and hair extensions).
5. Deep condition once a week
Use Frontrow's nourishing and moisturising conditioner, rich in Coconut and Argan oil as well as Shea Butter. If you're looking for something DIY you can find at home, try olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil to deep condition your hair naturally. Warm it up a little and then apply it liberally from the roots to the tips. Once your hair is well coated, cover it with plastic wrap or a shower cap, and wrap a towel over it to retain warmth, as this allows the oils to deeply penetrate the hair shaft. Leave the oil on your hair for at least 30 minutes. The longer you leave it on, the more you will nourish your hair. Just be sure to completely rinse it out when you’re finished, or you’ll risk burning your hair when you use styling products.
6. For frizzy hair, use protein
If your hair is particularly frizzy or hard to tame, swap the hot oil treatment for a protein mask. Mix two egg yolks with lukewarm water, and massage the mixture into your scalp and hair shaft. Wrap your hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap, and cover with a towel. Allow to penetrate for one hour before rinsing. Bananas, avocados and mayonnaise are also effective in treating frizzy hair.
7. Use leave-in oil on your hair
Two to three drops of leave-in oil (such as almond or argon oil) is all you need to add some shine to dry, damaged hair. After styling, rub it between your hands and run it through your hair, concentrating especially well on the ends of your hair.
8. Treat dandruff naturally
If you have seborrhoeic dermatitis – also known as dandruff – it’s important to avoid the harsh chemicals found in over-the-counter shampoos. Instead, use one of the following: Tea tree oil – add about 20 drops to your shampoo. Alternatively, use 20 drops in your oil treatment, or keep a bottle of tea tree oil in the shower and use two drops when washing your hair; apple cider vinegar – dilute the vinegar with water in a 1:1 ratio, and then massage the vinegar into your scalp. Wrap your hair in plastic or a shower cap and cover with a towel. Leave for one hour before rinsing. Do this once a week.
