A Wedding Beauty Guide by Kim Irwin FrontRow
When it comes to planning a wedding, there are so many things to think about that it’s easy to let your beauty routine slide. From finding the perfect venue to sourcing caterers, planning the menu and handling the seating arrangements, your beauty needs may end up taking a back seat – until it’s too late. But don’t worry, that’s where we come in. We’ve put together the ultimate wedding beauty timeline to help ensure that you look gorgeous and glowing on your big day – not frazzled and flushed! Stick to this guideline and you’ll look your radiant best, from your perfect skin and make-up right down to your nails and gorgeous hair.
Eight months before your wedding
Start taking vitamins to strengthen your hair and nails and give you healthier skin. Speak to your beauty therapist or a nutritionalist about the best vitamins to take for your needs. Start laser hair removal to target those troublesome areas you’d rather not worry about. You’ll need to wait at least four weeks between sessions, and you’ll probably require four to eight sessions, so it’s best to start early. Get more stringent with your skincare routine. This means cleansing, toning and moisturising your face twice a day, every day, and treating trouble areas. Remember to exfoliate twice a week, and don’t neglect the rest of your body either. Full body exfoliation is a must, as is daily moisturising. Start exercising and eating more healthily. We all know of brides who’ve crash-dieted their way into their dresses, but they often look frail and pale on their wedding days, which is not what you want. Starting a healthy eating and exercise plan now will ensure you look fit and luminous on your big day, rather than weak and washed out. Test-drive a new hue. If you’re thinking of trying a new hair colour before your wedding, don’t leave it until the last minute. If you hate it, your wedding photos will be a constant reminder. Why not invest in some clip in hair extensions which are easy to apply, easy to remove, and will give you a brand new look without the long-term commitment? If you love them, you can wear them to your wedding for a gorgeous, straight-out-of-a-magazine look. Go cold turkey on bad habits. Cigarettes? Stub them out. Sleeping with your make-up on? Put a stop to it. Quit your bad skincare habits and replace them with good ones – it’ll make the world of difference on your wedding day, and your photos will be the proof. Start drinking two litres of water a day, use a separate towel to dry your face, and avoid touching your face as much as you can.
Four months before your wedding
Book some hair and make-up trials. Your hair and make-up are going to be the two greatest factors influencing your wedding look, so you want to be sure you love them. Start trying out hairstylists and make-up artists at least four months in advance, and the minute you find the ones you’re happy with, book them! You don’t want to miss out due to conflicting schedules.
Two months before your wedding
Plan your tan. If you’re going for the sun-kissed look, you have a few ways of achieving it. If you choose a spray tan, book a test run now to see if you like the look. If you do, make your wedding tan appointment ASAP to ensure you get a booking (two days before your wedding is ideal). If you choose a gradual tanning moisturiser, start incorporating into your beauty routine now to achieve a glowing, even look by the time your big day rolls around. Brighten your smile with a professional teeth whitening treatment. These often require more than one appointment (and the at-home treatment may take several weeks) so do it now if you want the perfect sparkling smile in time for your wedding. Accessorise. Accessories are a huge part of your wedding look but because they’re physically so small and dainty, they’re easy to overlook. Avoid last-minute panic by gathering your accoutrements now – think hair pins and clips, lip colour, jewellery and other small but essential touches. Get busy botoxing. Botox takes a few days to really kick in, and lasts a few months. If you’re planning to use it before your wedding, do it now so that you enjoy its full effect in your photos, and also ride out any potential issues in time. Take your fitness up a notch by adding another half an hour to your workouts, starting a weekend step class or cutting back on the sweet treats. Once you see your wedding photos, it’ll all have been worth it!
Two weeks before your wedding
Revitalise your hair. Visit your salon for nourishing or conditioning treatment that will enhance your colour, and have your split ends cut off. Now is also a great time for a subtle colour change or enhancement, such as ombre or balayage highlights (enhance this effect with our extensions!). Scrub up. Don’t forget your twice-weekly full-body exfoliating sessions. Sugar scrubs work especially well, particularly when they’re made with essential oils that moisturise your skin. Shape your brows now to avoid waxing or threading-related redness on your wedding day. Then simply pluck any stray hairs the day before.
One week before your wedding
Have a facial. Make sure you choose a reputable salon that uses quality products. The last thing you want before your wedding is a break-out – as if you don’t have enough to worry about! Go for a soothing, hydrating facial that will calm and nourish your skin.
Five days before your wedding
Attend to all your waxing needs. This gives your skin enough time to calm down and heal while ensuring that you’ll still have a silky smooth appearance on your big day.
Three days before your wedding
Give yourself an at-home treatment. With just 72 hours to go, you’re probably buzzing with excitement and nervous energy. That’s why it’s a good idea to take a moment to relax and just breathe. Run a soothing bubble bath, light some candles and pour yourself a glass of wine or cup of tea. Then apply a nourishing facemask to restore balance and revitalise your skin.
Two days before your wedding
Go for your spray tan. This gives the residual colour enough time to fade, making the overall effect look a lot more natural. Have a mani/pedi. Even if you don’t usually choose gel, do it for your wedding, as this will ensure that you don’t have to deal with bothersome chips and cracks on your wedding day. Prepare your hair extensions. If you’ve chosen to use extensions, ensure that they’re clean, styled and ready to use. Did you know that if you use high-quality, clip-in extensions like these ones, you can style them just as you would your normal hair? How awesome is that?
One day before your wedding
Hydrate. Tomorrow’s going to be a big day, and you’ll probably forget to eat or drink very much. Be sure to hydrate today so that your skin looks fresh and healthy tomorrow. Get your beauty rest and try to relax, even though your mind is spinning! You’ve worked hard and done everything you can – now try to unwind.
